By Friday noon, "Ne Zha 2" had topped trending lists on major Chinese streaming platforms. Tencent Video reported 13 million reservations while Youku and iQiyi recorded 7.4 million and 8 million, respectively. Bilibili clips surpassed 100 million views following Beijing Enlight Media's announcement on July 31.
Directed by Yang Yu, better known as Jiaozi, the film follows mythological figures Ne Zha and Ao Bing who unite against vengeful dragon kings after being reborn in lotus-formed bodies. Released during China's Spring Festival holiday in January, "Ne Zha 2" earned 15.45 billion yuan ($2.13 billion) domestically with 324 million admissions during its theatrical run that ended June 30.
The film's worldwide total of $2.19 billion makes it the top-grossing animated film globally, the highest-grossing non-English language film and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time. Distributors A24 and CMC Pictures announced in July that an English-language version featuring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will open in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on Aug. 22.
